Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen (1919–2004) is one of Portugal’s most revered poets, known for her elegant, crystalline language and deep connection to the natural world, justice, and the human spirit. A dignified and principled figure, Andersen was devoted to art, truth, and the pursuit of beauty. She spent much of her life in Portugal, though her Danish ancestry and well-traveled background gave her a cosmopolitan outlook. Andersen’s personality is often described as warm, resolute, and deeply moral; she cared deeply about social justice and freedom, values that resonate strongly throughout her poetry. During Portugal’s Salazar dictatorship, she was an outspoken critic, and later, after the revolution of 1974, she served as a member of parliament briefly, dedicating herself to the democratic ideals she held dear.
