Poets Tavern & Inn
It was built as a place to house the horses that once served the castle. Then, it was a guesthouse. A place for weary travelers to rest their heads for a night. It became a clothing factory, at one point. A ballroom for local celebrations at another. It was once a garage to store cars. Then, for a while, it was nothing.
Life was returned to the ancestral walls when it became the Passadico do Avô - a restaurant serving Portuguese cuisine and a boutique inn. For a long time, it was again closed. In 2024, it was once again revived to serve as a restaurant serving Portuguese cuisine and a boutique inn to house visitors to this beautiful area.

Experience Avô
At the confluence of the Alva and Pomares Rivers, nestled in the Serra da Estrela mountains, lies the beautiful village of Avô.
Avô offers a blend of rich history and natural splendor. With its traditional stone houses and narrow streets, Avô showcases its heritage through landmarks like the 16th-century Church of São Pedro. Surrounded by lush hills and the serene Alva River, the area is perfect for hiking, fishing, and exploring scenic landscapes. Visitors can also enjoy local cuisine and experience the warm hospitality of this picturesque village. In the summer months, enjoy Praia Fluvial de Avô, a popular river beach and the social center of the village.
Avô Fire Recover
In August 2025, this beautiful, lush river valley was charred by a wildfire that devastated the area.
Vila de Avô itself received only minor damage, but the surrounding hills and farms are blackened and will take months, if not years, to recover. All photos taken on this website were taken before the fires. The landscape will look very different for a while. The Poets Tavern & Inn was not damaged or harmed and we have re-opened the Inn to provide a space for anyone who needs it during this time.
